Preview: Super Smash Brothers: Brawl

With the great success of the Nintendo Wii it seems everyone is getting excited about the upcoming addition to the Super Smash Bros. series. The game was a huge success in its first releases and is already showing some great promises in its upcoming title "Brawl" by utilizing the Wii style game play and even allowing for online game play. The game play is still similar to the old style fighting but will include a better single play mode. The game will utilize side-scroll view and will allow up to four local combatants along with online play.

Game Play
The game play is different than most fighting games which many agree is partly the reason for the success of the game. You will still have the ability to choose from a number of characters and begin knocking your opponents off of the screen. The game will utilize percentages for health starting at 0 and going up through 999% as you take on more damage. The higher your percentage is the more you go flying when you are attacked. As with the classic game play when you are knocked out of the boundary or off the stage you lose a point or life depending on the game play you chose. Control will be utilized by the Wii Remote on its side, along with the Nun chuck, the Classic controller, or even the GameCube controller. You will be able to use any of the combinations of controls along with creating your own control styles.

Fighting includes a wide variety of attacks and is promoted with the press of a button along with the tilt of the control stick or the press of a direction on the D-pad (depending of the mode of control being used). Each character will have special attacks unique to his/her or its own abilities. These moves will be called "Final Smash" moves. These final smash moves are far more damaging to your opponent and vary from unavoidable blasts to temporary transformations. You will get the ability to perform a final smash when you destroy a "Smash Ball". If you destroy a Smash Ball but do not utilize its power quick enough you will lose the ability to utilize its power and then the Smash Ball will be knocked out of the character and resume flying around the stage.

Items will consist of a major portion of game play in Brawl. You will be able to throw items and use them as melee weapons. Different items have different affect to the variety of characters. There are some classic items from the previous game installments and some new items. Some of the classic items have received upgrades to give them more appeal. Two of the items are Assist Trophies and Poke Balls which call up Pokemon to assist the play. Any summoned Pokemon cannot be controlled by the Pokemon and are usually invincible.

The stages in Super Smash Brothers: Brawl include many varieties from the classic games and some new ones. The levels are 3 dimensional and characters will not be able to move freely along the z-axis. You will find a variation of floating platforms to moving areas where the characters are forced to keep up with the level as they battle. Every stage has boundaries that cannot be passed without losing a life. Some known stages are a cycling day-to-night system in the Battlefield stage, a season system in the Yoshi's Island stage, and destructible platforms in the Skyworld stage. You will even be able to create your own stages in a mode called "Stage Builder". You will have the ability to save created levels on an SD card and take them to other consoles. You will also be able to send/receive custom levels over the Wi-Fi connection through your friend list.

Vs. Mode
You will see a mode called "Special Brawl" in this new release. In this mode you will be able to battle in matches and be able to highly customize much of the game play. You will be able to select as many options as you wish for a single match. Brawl will also contain Tourney Mode which allows a large number of CPU or Human opponents during game play.

Single Player
In single player mode you will go through random generated matches that consist of many stages before you reach the end. Each level will feature arenas from a particular series such as Zelda or Pokemon. Some of the new levels will include conditions such as metal opponent or two-on-two team battle.

You will also be able to play objective-oriented mini games in the "Stadium Mode". Such things include Home-Run Contest mode. In this mode the player must beat the Sandbag to deal as much damage as possible in 10 seconds the strike it with a Home-Run Bat to send it flying. You will also see Target Smash mini game where you break 10 targets as fast as possible. Some Stadium Mode mini games feature coop game play or even competitive multi player. New to the series you will have events where there are predetermined situations. Each event will have 3 difficulties which a high score record for each.

Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary
New to the series Brawl will feature a mode focused on a unique character storyline with many side scrolling levels and multiple bosses to battle. It will even feature CG cut scenes explaining certain storylines. The Subspace Emissary features a group of antagonists called the Subspace Army which is lead by an Ancient Minister. Some of the characters from the army have appeared in classic Nintendo games. This new mode focuses on character development and brings the user into a more enjoyable single player mode. The mode however will even allow for coop game play. There will be 5 difficulties in the mode and will allow methods to increase your characters' power during game play.

This new mode will give you a limited choice characters at the beginning and as your progress others will join your team as you venture through the story. Characters may even leave your team. When someone on your team loses a life another character can take his/her or its place. You will be able to change the character order to your own likings.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection
New to the Super Smash Bros. series will be the ability to utilize the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. This gives you the ability to brawl players from all over the world. You will be able to play with registered friends or random parties. As with most games the players nicknames will be shown during the matches and you will be able to converse with up to four phrases set by the player before play. While the online game play is being initialized players will be able to practice fighting against the Sandbag. There will also be the option to watch online matches and bet coins on the outcome. Some modes such as Home-Run Contest will be playable over the Wi-Fi Connection. Another added feature is the ability to take snapshots during specific game modes such as Brawl and Target Smash and send them to friends. During the betting process for online matches you will even be able to win a jackpot of coins if you win. More features are said to be in the making but not detailed as of this point.

Collectibles
As it was in Super Smash Bros. Melee there will be trophies that can be collected throughout game play. The trophies give a brief history of the object it shows. You will also be able to collect stickers of video game artwork. You can place these stickers on the virtual backgrounds and record snapshots and even send to other players over the Wi-Fi service. Yet another new feature will be the ability to select new music for playable stages and the ability to collect coins in Classic mode used for betting.
